Terry Fox Run 2008

Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope.

After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

It was a journey that Canadians never forgot.

However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22.

The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

The Terry Fox Run meant a lot to Laila, and Jenin, so Ramsey decided to run with the girls at school to support the cause.

Quilting Class 101

Oh were do I begin......First lets start by saying that Ramsey forced me to take this class, because he thinks my soap making is a useless hobby. He also thought that for some reason I would be a great quilter, because I am creative. I have always wanted to learn how to sew, but never had the time to learn, or take classes. It is very hard making soap in Malaysia, because the most important items that I need to make soap can't be brought here. I have to order them from the U.S. and ship them to Kuala Lumpur. So I thought why not try some new craft that can be done overseas with a lot of ease. I will still continue to make soap, and ship my items here, but try other things as well.

So today we started at 10 am sharp, and of coarse we were so excited. We all had to wash, dry, and iron our fabrics before we started the class. So today we started by making templates in order to cut our fabrics. Making templates is very hard, and I have learned to just buy them, it makes quilting go a lot faster. After we were done with the templates we started cutting the fabric, this was loads of fun, but it also took a bit of time to get it done right. You have to make sure you measure correctly or you will need to buy more fabric if you make mistakes. After that we started to piece some of our patches. They had us start on the rounded pieces, and had us hand sew them. This pretty much took the rest of the class to complete, and we had o finish it at home to be ready for our next class.

If you ask me this class was not a Quilting 101, but an advanced class with all techniques wrapped up into one class. They basically gave us a pattern that we had to follow for our first project. This had many shapes, and styles for us to learn to cut and sew together. It is very hard work but, it is starting to look like a quilt now.

We have our next class on Thursday, so stay tuned for more progress.....

Lavendar Vanilla Soap

Yes this if you hadn't already guessed it is made with lavender buds, and vanilla essential oil. I love the look of this soap, it looks so manly but delicate at the same time. I made them round because Ramsey loves round soap, he says it is easier for him to hold in his hand. I can't wait for him to use them, they are still curing so we will need to wait three more weeks.

Pink Grapfruit Soap

Pink Grapefruit is one of my favorite scents. It is very light, sweet, soft scent. I made a four pound batch because I knew my girls would love this scent as well, and they did. I am sure this won't last that long in my house.

Chocolate Cocoa Butter Soap

I made this luxuries bar of soap from........Chocolate, and Cocoa Butter. I slightly used some vanilla essential oil to lightly scent it. I only have a picture of one bar because that is all that was left of the batch. Everyone really loved this recipe, and scent combination.

My First Salt Soap

This is my first attempt at a bar of salt soap. I love the colors, and the scent was berrylicious. I read that when you add salt to soap it will trace very fast, and it did. I was very happy with my recipes, and will definitely make this again.

Iko's first Pajama Party

This is Iko's first pajama party. We were invited to Alec's 7th birthday party at California Pizza Kitchen. We all ordered pizza, and them had some birthday ice cream sundaes. After that we went home to watch Kung Fu Panda, we stayed up pretty late that night. Ramsey set up the air mattresses for the girls to sleep on. Before the movie was finished all the girls fell asleep on the couch. The next day we had pancakes, and sausages for breakfest, then we headed over to Bangsar. We meet up with Adila, and dropped off Iko to her mom. She already started to miss us. Don't worry Iko we will see you again next month when you come to Kuala Lumpur.

Pretty Cupcakes

Roselle asked me to make her son some cupcakes for his seventh birthday party. She wanted different color sprinkles, and different choices for frosting. That is why you see so many different looking colorful cupcakes. They turned out really great, and tasted even better.

Steamed Curry Chicken and Veggies

I borrowed Sheryl's steamer today because she raved how easy it was to make really delicious meals with this machine. I was very shocked to see how moist the chicken and veggies were, and they tasted great. All I did was coat the chicken, onions, and garlic in olive oil, curry powder, and a little salt. Then I placed that mixture on the top rack of the steamer. I coated the potatoes, and veggies the same way and placed them in a separate compartments in the steamer. One side I put all the green veggies, and the other side I put the potatoes. In thirty minutes it was all done, it was so easy. I seriously doubted that this would turn out good, or even edible so I had pizza as a back up dinner. Turned out great, and the kids still ate the pizza.

Gift Basket for Julie

I made this gift basket for Julie. She is a really great friend who helped me tremendously during Jenin's birthday party. I made bath salts, and bath bombs that were all scented in pearberry. I put both jars in the basket, and filled it up with potpourri.

Jenin's Prep Senior Eid Party

This party is a little bit different from the Hari Raya party. I made this presentation to Jenin's class to show them how we celebrate Eid in our family. I had made star and moon cookies, and brought cookie icing, and sprinkles for the class to decorate the cookies with. After that I showed them a map of Palestine, and showed them were Nablus, and were the Gaza Strip were located. After that Jenin handed out money envelopes with 1 ringgit inside them. Jenin and her class had a blast, they even sent home thank you cards the next day to show there appreciation for my presentation.

Easy Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 can (20 oz) pineapple slices in juice, drained, juice reserved
1 jar (6 oz) maraschino cherries without stems, drained
1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® yellow cake mix

Vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
1.Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). In 13x9-inch pan, melt butter in oven. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over butter. Arrange pineapple slices on brown sugar. Place cherry in center of each pineapple slice, and arrange remaining cherries around slices; press gently into brown sugar.
2. Add enough water to reserved pineapple juice to measure 1 1/4 cups. Make cake batter as directed on box, substituting pineapple juice mixture for the water. Pour batter over pineapple and cherries.
3. Bake 40 to 45 minutes (42 to 48 minutes for dark or nonstick pan) or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately run knife around side of pan to loosen cake. Place heatproof serving plate upside down onto pan; turn plate and pan over. Leave pan over cake 5 minutes so brown sugar topping can drizzle over cake; remove pan. Cool 30 minutes. Serve warm or cool. Store covered in refrigerator.

Jenin's Birthday 2008

This is Jenin's birthday party at Craft Attack. She was really excited to have her party here because she got to chose the crafts that her class made. It was really nice to sit there and do absolutely nothing for the party. The Craft Attack staff did all the work, along with Julie, and Scott.
